Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer Review
Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer features some of the futuristic and high technology in beard trimmer at a price of below $80. It features a fully digital touch screen, previous cut memory setting, motorized comb for adjusting hair length setting and auto-sensing to match beard thickness with cutting speed.
1. Attachment and Accessories
The package also comes with a charging adapter with a USB charging cable and a cleaning brush to clean the blades from cut hairs. There are no other accessories provided as you have all the things you need for your beard trimming. The size of the Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer is 7 inches by 2 inches. Comparing with other beard trimmers, the size for this trimmer is a bit bulkier and heavier than other beard trimmers.
It will take three to four trimming sessions to adjust and familiarize myself with the size and weight while maneuvering the trimmer. Once you have used it for two or three weeks, the size and weight might not be too dominant to compensate for a great shaving experience. I will break down my review into parts of the beard trimmer as below.
2. Beard Guard
The beard guard can be easily slid up to remove from the blades for any cleaning. Slide the guard into the guides until it clicks into the place to refit the guard.
You are provided with only one beard guard as it will stay stationary while the blades go up and down to get the hair length setting you desired. Unlike other beard trimmer models, you are provided with too many guards of different lengths, so for some people, it is tough to get organized and require a lot of space to store all the guards.
One drawback is that the guard piece is made of fragile and thin plastic. I haven’t had any problems with it yet, but I could imagine it shattering if I dropped it or anything. I wish the beard guard were made of metal or strong plastic.
One more issue: the plastic guard did get trapped in my beard on occasion, but it worked great otherwise. I wish the guard were made entirely of one piece, with no gaps so it wouldn’t get trapped. The issue only occurs if my beard is quite long, maybe like a 7-day beard, but the guard does not get trapped or stuck if I trim a 3-day beard.
3. Adjusting Beard Cutting Length
You can adjust Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer hair setting from 0.4 mm to 18 mm with 0.1 increments in between. The trimmer guard is attached to the side of the trimmer, which can go up and down with motorize control while the cutting unit will stay static at its place.
The display will display the current length setting, and you can push the “UP” or “DOWN” button to adjust the setting you wish. The adjustable length setting is very sensitive, so it is recommended to activate the travel lock before you start trimming so that you don’t accidentally change the length during trimming.
It also can store and memorize up to four length settings so you can easily recall the setting you frequently used simply by tapping the “Profile” button. Four length setting is memorized based on four different lengths you previously used. If you set a new length after that, the oldest length setting will be automatically deleted and replaced with the new length.
To select the profile you need, push the “Profile” button one time for Profile 1, two times for Profile 2 and so on. For your information, the bar below the length setting number is dual function; battery indicator and profile selection indicator. You can see the above image; when you select the first profile, the indicator will become one bar, and for the second profile, the bar will become two bars and so on until the fourth profile. During standard time, the bar will indicate the battery status. I love the memory setting as I trim once every three days, so I can recall the cut length setting quickly and get consistent beard length each time.
4. Cutting Blades
The cutting blades are made of stainless steel and coated with titanium coating for even longer corrosion resistance. The blades are self-sharpening and need to be oiled with cleaning lubricant or light viscosity maintenance oil once every two or three months. The manufacturer recommends changing the blade every 18 to 24 months according to your trimming frequency.
You can purchase the replacement for the blade on the Remington website by searching for RP00588, which cost you $9.99, not include the shipping. The blade width is 31.5 mm, and it cuts perfectly for the beard, but I am having a problem trimming precisely around the edges of my nose and mouth due to the wide blade. It will be perfect if the trimmer has one smaller blade for precision trimming purposes.
The blades are removable by pushing the blade upward for cleaning with the provided cleaning brush. Removing the blades are relatively easy for me, but I have a problem getting the blades back on for the first time. After several tries, I successfully put it back on, and it works OK. Make sure to put it the right way or not; the blades will not cut when the trimmer is ON.
Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer blades are fully washable, so you can wash them under running hot water to remove all the hairs. Sometimes, water can seep into the rotor parts under the blades, so make sure to remove the blades and let all the parts dry before using them. Water can catalyze the corrosion process for the rotor parts, so it is good to take precautions.
5. Weight and Size
The dimension for this beard trimmer is 2 inch (wide), 7 inches (long) and 1.75 inches (thick). It weighs around 8.16 ounces (0.51 pounds). In my opinion, this device is a bit bulky and quite heavy.
Compared to other models in the price range, Braun Beard Trimmer BT7240 or BT5240 is much lighter and compact. Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer receives several complaints on how bulky and heavy it is, but the performance and convenience have helped some users ignore this beard trimmer’s extra size and weight.
I have a big hand, perhaps above average size of standard hand size, so it feels alright holding this trimmer. It does feel a bit heavy, so if you need to trim for an extended time, your hand might feel a bit tired. For people with small hands, you will find it is not ergonomic and hard to maneuver the trimmer to reach certain places.
6. Battery and Charging
Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer comes with a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that should give you around 50 minutes of trimming time for a 2-hour charging. When you receive your trimmer, you need to charge it for 4 hours before using it for the first time.
It does not come with a charging stand, just the wall socket, charging cable and one USB charging cable. I tried charging with the USB cable to my laptop, and it works, but it takes more than 2 hours to get it fully charged. As expected, the laptop may not be as efficient as the wall socket, but it might be helpful during travel.
One more good thing is you can use the device cordless or during charging. Some beard trimmer models cannot be operated while connected to the charging cord due to safety concerns of electrocution if operated in the presence of water. I sometimes forgot to charge the beard trimmer, so for me, the ability to use the beard trimmer while charging is a bonus as I can save time rather than wait for the trimmer to get charged so I can start trimming my beard.
I shave every three days, and it takes me around 5 to 7 minutes per trimming session. With one full charged battery, it lasts me around one month until I need to charge it again. I am happy with the battery performance.
The battery indicator is located under the hair length setting with a four-bar indication, as shown below.
Theoretically, each bar will represent about 12 minutes of trimming session, so you can estimate when you need to charge your device before the battery is finished.
I have seen many of the Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer users complained about the problem with the battery gone dead after three to four months after use. I consider myself lucky, and the battery is still going strong after eight months. This device comes with a 5-year warranty; contact Remington customer service to refund or exchange if you find yourself with a dead battery.
The customer service is quite responsive to my enquiries, so I think they will serve you alright. If you have any experience with the battery issue for Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer, feel free to comment below.
7. Travel Lock Function
The button on the display is very sensitive, so I am glad I can easily activate the travel lock function. The travel lock switch is located on the right side of the trimmer body.
Slide up the switch to unlock and slide down to lock the trimmer. Always engage the travel lock if you store the trimmer in luggage to prevent the trimmer from being unintentionally turned on.
8. Trimming Performance
Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer has a feature called AutoTurbo which automatically controls the motor and blade speed according to the beard thickness and length. You can hear the motor speeding up once you move the trimmer to cut a less dense beard to a thicker beard. The sound is not too loud when it revs to increase the motor speed. I have used a much quitter trimmer before, but it is less potent than Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer. This trimmer is a bit louder but not that annoying noisy sound, and it is still within the limit of “not-waking-up-your-wife”.
The sound can be pretty loud if I shove the blade into the thick beard, as it will rev up drastically to match the blade speed with the beard thickness. The best way is to trim the thin and short beard slowly into a thicker beard bit by bit.
The blades are sharp and cut nicely with minimal hair pulling out. As I have mentioned before, sometimes the trimmer guard gets stuck and trapped inside the beard, but it works great. I just need to slowly slide the trimmer across the beard so that it does not get trapped.

My Final Words on Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer
Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer is a decent beard trimmer with futuristic features such as a touch display and a motorized hair length setting. For a price around $70, I would not recommend you to buy this beard trimmer as you can get a much better beard trimmer at even lower prices. My biggest concern is how “beefy” it is. It makes it less ergonomic, especially for people with smaller hands. Less ergonomic means less control over the beard trimmer, causing the trimming process less effective and require more time. Beard trimmer or shaver needs to be ergonomic to ensure maximum trimming and shaving performance.
For a better alternative, you can consider Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 5500 or Braun Beard Trimmer BT5240.
